Tips & Tricks

Here is a collection of tips and tricks that I put together after years of experience in computer maintenance and repair. This is for anybody who is looking for new solutions and techniques to do more with your existing hardware and save your valuable time and money.
Beware that editing the registry of a computer is a sensitive job which if it is not done right, can cripple a pc or completely damage the operating system.
I have tested all of these on Windows XP-Professional but you may run them on your own risk and I do not accept any responsibility of any sort of damage or malfunctioning in your computer!

  1. Speed up and protect your computer

  2. Add hibernate icon to Windows XP shutdown menu

    Normally, there is no 'Hibernate' button in computer's shut down menu. You can simply download this small registry piece and run it which will add the button to the shut down menu.

  3. Change the listening port for Remote Desktop

  4. Multiple simultaneous Remote Desktop Sessions in Windows XP Professional

Do it at your own risk!

STEP 1
Start your Windows in Safe Mode (tap on F8 before Windows Loading Splash Screen) --> right click on “My Computer” and click on “Properties” --> go to “Remote” tab and uncheck “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer” --> click OK.

STEP 2
Go to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel; open “Administrative Tools” and then “Services”; --> double click on “Terminal Services”; --> choose “Disabled” for “Startup Type” option; --> click OK.

STEP 3
Go to C:\windows\system32\dllcache; --> rename the termsrv.dll file to termsrv.old or another name you like; Copy and paste termsrv.dll to that folder; --> go to C:\windows\system32 (the upper folder of the current one)

do the same operation: rename termserv.dll also here, and put another copy of the file I linked above.

STEP 4
Click Start, --> “Run…”, type “regedit” (without quotes) and press ENTER --> Go to this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Licensing Core;
Click on "Edit", choose “New” > DWORD,
Name the new key “EnableConcurrentSessions” (without quotes), then edit it and set its value to 1;
Close the editor.

STEP 5
Click Start, --> “Run”, type “gpedit.msc” (without quotes) and press ENTER;
Open Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Terminal Services
Double click on “Limit number of connections”
Choose “Enabled” and set the maximum number of concurrent connections as needed to allow (2 or more), then Restart Windows in normal mode.

STEP 6
Go back to Remote tab of My Computer’s properties and activate “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer”;
Go back to “Terminal services” in “Services” and set its “Startup type” to “Manual”
Finally restart Windows. Your operating system should be ready to accept multiple remote desktop connections.
The list of users that can connect to the PC is editable in the remote tab of My computer.
